Dutch violinist Julia Philippens has evolved as a genre-surpassing musician. Improvising on jazzmusic or contemporary classical music became a second nature since she developed herself after her classical studies.

After her Jazz Bachelor, which she completed Cum Laude, she graduated Summa Cum Laude for her Jazz Master at the Conservatory of Amsterdam where the committee described her as a “unique, pioneering violinist with a radiant stage presence.”

During her studies Julia co-founded Fuse for which she plays, arranges and composes. With their bold approach to string music and a matching stage presence, Fuse rapidly became a one-to-watch formation on the cutting edge of Dutch musical life.

Fuse is currently the houseband of the Dutch TV show ‘Podium Witteman’.

They released their Debut Album “Studio” in 2016 for with they got nominated for and Edison award. Their second album “Studio 2” received the Edison Public Choice Award 2019.

Since 2012, they organize their own concert series named ConFuse, a platform for talent and our creative playground. Recently, the 9th edition took place at the North Sea Jazz Club in Amsterdam.

Julia believes in the power of improvisation. Allowing yourself to get to know your own voice, translate voices of others into music and…communicate. And to do that, there shouldn’t be any boundaries. Not by genre, not by fear of the unknown. 

As a starting jazz violinist, she lacked an example that brought the two worlds  of classical -and jazz-music together. She wants to make this path a little easier to tread. 

With Fuse this exploration is in their DNA and with her sister Rosanne Philippens she performed at festivals in Berlin and Norway and in 2018 they toured the Netherlands together with the Peter Beets trio and played Bach, Chopin, but also pieces by Charlie Parker and John Coltrane.

Since 2018 Julia started composing music. First for her duo with jazz pianist Xavi Torres. Later she was asked to write music for the videos of designer Ronald van der Kemp, and composed the TV leader for Opium.

Her first Octet": “Hommage a Enescu” premiered in Theaters Tilburg by Rosanne Philippens & friends and was broadcast live on Radio 4. Her Opus 2 "Influent" premiered in December 2020 at Podium Witteman and in the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam). Aug 2021 the orchestral version of Influent premiered at the Veenhuizen Festival. 

Julia was invited to play with formations such as the Konrad Koselleck Bigband, Philharmonic Sudwestfalen, Noord Nederlands Orkest, Laundry Bigband and the Zurich Jazz Orchestra. She has recorded and performed with Justin Dicioccio, Ed Kowalczyk, Herbert Grönemeyer, Benjamin Herman, the Rosenberg trio, Ramon Valle, Michael Borstlap, Didier Lockwood, Ruud Jacobs, Peter Beets and Shakira.

Since 2019 Julia and Jazz pianist Xavi Torres Vincente join forces playing their own compositions in wich classical melodies are alternated with grooves and swirling improvisations.

Since 2021 Julia and Cuban star pianist Ramon Valle started working together on an exciting project in which they give concerts without any notes prepared. They talk to eachother through their improvisations and take their audience on a trip that without a roadmap.

June 2022 Julia will on go tour with “The Noord Nederlands Orkest”  performing the Jazz violin Concerto that was especially written for her by Thomas Beijer.

Julia has been a Jazz Violin teacher at the Royal Conservatoire (in The Hague) since 2021.

She plays an Antonio Rocca (Turin 1844) that was offered to her by the NMF."

Violiste Julia Philippens is uitgegroeid tot een genre-overschrijdend musicus. Improviseren op jazzmuziek of klassieke muziek is een tweede natuur voor haar geworden. 

Na haar Jazz Bachelor die ze Cum Laude afsloot, studeerde ze Summa Cum Laude af voor haar Jazz Master aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam waar de commissie haar omschreef als een “unieke, baanbrekende violiste met een radiante podiumpresentatie.”

Tijdens haar studies richtte Julia Fuse op, met wie ze niet alleen speelt maar waarvoor ze ook arrangeert en componeert. Fuse is regelmatig te gast bij het tv-programma Podium Witteman als “huisband”. 

Fuse is voor hun eerste album “Studio” genomineerd voor een Edison Klassiek. Hun tweede album “Studio 2” is beloond met de Edison Publieksprijs 2019.

Julia gelooft in de kracht van het improviseren. Hierdoor leer je je eigen stem kennen en dat werkt niet alleen heel bevrijdend maar kan je ook helpen bij de interpretatie van klassiek repertoire. Als beginnend jazz-violiste ontbrak het haar aan een voorbeeld die deze twee werelden samenbracht. Zij wil dit pad wat makkelijker te betreden maken. Zelf bracht ze de klassieke en jazz-wereld bij elkaar met haar zus Rosanne Philippens. Zij stonden op festivals in Berlijn en Noorwegen en in 2018 toerden ze samen door Nederland met het Peter Beets trio en speelden Bach, Chopin maar ook stukken van Charlie Parker en John Coltrane. 

Begin 2019 bundelden Julia en jazz-pianist Xavi Torres Vicente de krachten en spelen ze op concerten hun eigen composities waarin klassieke melodieën worden afgewisseld met grooves en wervelende improvisaties. 

Naast haar stukken voor het duo met Xavi componeerde Julia muziek voor de mode-video’s van Ronald van der Kemp en schreef ze de tv-leader voor het programma Opium.

Julia speelt graag als soliste met diverse Big Bands. Zo was ze gast-soliste bij het Zurich Jazz Orchestra, het Jazzorchestra of the Concertgebouw, de Konrad Kosseleck Big Band en Philharmonic Sudwestfalen. Ze heeft samengewerkt met oa Justin Dicioccio, Ed Kowalczyk, Herbert Grönemeyer, Benjamin Herman, the Rosenberg trio, Ramon Valle, Michael Borstlap, Didier Lockwood, Ruud Jacobs, Peter Beets en Shakira.

Cubaanse ster-pianist Ramon Valle en Julia begonnen in 2021 een spannend project waar ze concerten geven zonder voorbereid repertoire. Ze spreken met elkaar door met elkaar te improviseren en nemen hun publiek mee op een reis zonder voorbedachte bestemming.

Juni 2022 gaat Julia op tour met het “Noord Nederlands Orkest” en speelt ze het jazz viool-concert dat speciaal voor haar geschreven is door Thomas Beijer.

Julia is sinds 2021 jazz viool-docent aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van den Haag.
